When to Surf the Mentawai Waves
The Mentawai Islands offer waves year-round, but the best time to surf is from March to November, when swells generated by storms in southern Africa and Antarctica hit the region, creating incredible waves. According to our insights at Sabbit Mentawai Surf Camp, here’s how the seasons break down:
-
March to April and October to November: Waves are generally smaller but highly consistent, ideal for beginners and intermediates looking for mellow sessions.
-
May to September: This is the peak season for size and consistency, with larger swells producing powerful, barreling waves that attract advanced surfers.
The winds in the Mentawais are typically light and variable throughout the year, allowing multiple surf spots to work simultaneously. This reduces crowding and ensures you’ll always find a wave to suit your style.
Types of Waves in the Mentawai Islands
The Mentawais are famous for their variety of waves, from playful, forgiving breaks to hollow, technical tubes. Here’s a breakdown of the types of waves you’ll encounter, with a focus on spots accessible from Sabbit Mentawai Surf Camp.
Beginner-Friendly Waves
For those new to surfing or looking for a more relaxed ride, the Mentawais have several forgiving breaks:
-
Pitstops: Located just a 5-minute walk from our camp, Pitstops is a fun, mellow right-hander perfect for beginners. It offers long, peeling walls that are great for practicing turns and building confidence.
-
Nipussi: A noble right-hander near Bankvaults, Nipussi works best at 3 to 5 feet during mid-tide. With three different takeoff zones, it’s spacious enough for multiple surfers and offers a good wall with occasional tubes, making it ideal for intermediates.
Intermediate Waves
Intermediate surfers will find plenty of waves to challenge and excite them without being too intimidating:
-
E-Bay: Accessible by paddling from our surf camp, E-Bay is a powerful, world-class left with two takeoff areas. When the swell direction and size are right, these sections connect with tube sections, offering a thrilling ride. Be cautious of the two rocks in front of the second takeoff and the closing final section. E-Bay works best at low tide for the best tubes and starts firing at 5 feet.
-
Hideaways: About 30 minutes by boat from our camp, Hideaways is one of the most consistent waves in the area, especially when the south wind blows. It’s a fun wave at smaller sizes (3-5 feet) and transforms into perfect tubes at 5 to 7 feet, best surfed at mid to high tide.
Advanced and Expert Waves
For seasoned surfers chasing adrenaline, the Mentawais deliver some of the best barreling waves in the world:
-
Kandui: Widely regarded as one of the best waves globally, Kandui is a fast, technical left that produces deep, long tubes. The bigger the swell, the better the tubes, offering the chance to score the ride of your life. It’s a 30-minute boat ride from our camp and best for experienced surfers.
-
Bankvaults: Just 15 minutes by speedboat, Bankvaults is a powerful, consistent right-hander with a variable takeoff. It throws incredible tubes that become more perfect as the wave size increases. Not all waves here are good, so wave selection is key—this spot is best for advanced surfers only.
-
Lance’s Right (HT’s): A legendary right-hander in South Sipora, Lance’s Right is one of the most consistent, fast, barreling waves in the world. It’s a bit farther from our camp but worth the trip for experts seeking perfection.
Variety Across the Region
The Mentawai Islands are divided into three main surf areas: Playgrounds in the north (where we’re located), Sipura in the middle, and Pagai in the south. Playgrounds alone has over 25 breaks accessible by boat, offering a mix of heavy-hitting waves with shallow reefs and more forgiving options. Sipura, including spots like Telescopes and Lance’s Left, leans toward experienced surfers with its heavy barrels, while Pagai features gems like Macaronis, known for its high-quality, consistent breaks.
